Donald Glover

Donald Glover has become a favorite of mine very quickly recently. He has an incredible range of talents that he seems to be fearless in exploring. I got to know him a while back in Community. He played Troy who was a really nerdy, funny, and childish (ha). The character was easily my favorite in the show and it was a great springboard to the rest of his career. He had a few spots on “Community” in which he would rap, but they were usually silly and abstract and meant to be comedic. “La Biblioteca” became a smash hit almost immediately.

 Whether or not this inspired his career as a rapper, it definitely gave him more incentive to pursue a musical career. He released his first album, Camp in 2011 under the moniker “Childish Gambino”, which was a relatively obscure album that showed a new, interesting, and weirder side to Donald Glover. He continued to release albums, having two hit singles in his 2013 album Because The Internet, and another hit single with his EP Kauai. His most recent album Awaken My Love won him a Grammy and produced his most famous single; “Redbone”. Donald Glover has said this is the end of his journey as Childish Gambino, but he recently signed a new record deal under RCA records. 

What this means for his music career is yet to be seen, but he has made an undeniably powerful name for himself in the filmography world with his show “Atlanta” which won him several Emmys in 2017. The show is beautifully powerful and is riddled with important themes and motifs illustrating issues Glover has himself faced as a black man growing up in Atlanta. He has many exciting projects coming up, including his highly anticipated role as young Lando Calrissian in Solo.
